07:06 AM EDT, 07/10/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission preliminarily found Meta Platforms (FB2A.F) in violation of the European Union's Digital Services Act over the "addictive design" of Instagram and Facebook. The commission said Friday the US technology giant failed to "adequately assess" the risks of its addictive design on users' physical and mental wellbeing, and that its current mitigation measures failed to "effectively tackle" such risks. It believes that Meta should implement design changes to both platforms. Meta can now respond to the preliminary views. If the findings are confirmed, the commission could issue a noncompliance decision, which would potentially lead to fines of up to 6% of the company's annual global turnover. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
