01:42 AM EDT, 07/12/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Saipem's (SPMI.MI) planned merger with Subsea 7 (SUBC.OL) will likely be subjected to an in-depth investigation from the European Commission over competition concerns, Reuters reported July 10, citing people privy to the matter. The competition watchdog's preliminary antitrust review of the Italian engineering and construction group's merger with the Norwegian subsea engineering company began in June 2026 and is expected to conclude on July 22, 2026. Both companies signed a binding merger deal in February 2025 to create a "global leader in energy services." Saipem, Subsea 7, and the commission did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
