The Zhitong Finance App learned that, according to people familiar with the matter, Mastercard (MA.US) is considering reselling most of its shares in its British payments subsidiary Vocalink to British banks in response to concerns raised by the outside world that this key asset is owned by an American company.

In 2016, Mastercard acquired Vocalink from a consortium of UK banks for £701 million (approximately $9373.8 million). According to people familiar with the matter, the deal involving 51% of the shares may be worth around £400 million (US$534.88 million).

DeliveryCo, an entity backed by several of the UK's leading banks and payment companies, is considered a potential buyer.

Vocalink is responsible for operating most of the UK's retail payment systems. According to its official website, the company designs, builds, and operates a bank account-based payment system in the UK, which processes more than 90% of the UK's payroll, more than 70% of household bills, and 98% of national benefits.
