It’s taken 10 years for the developers of a River Walk boutique hotel to reach the point where they can announce their opening date. The San Antonio Business Journal reports the Aztec Hotel, at the site of the Aztec Theatre building, will open near the end of August. The owners of the downtown property, led by Sam Panchevre, are nearing completion of the project to transform a portion of the structure into a new boutique hotel.

The redevelopment of multiple floors into a new River Walk hotel is now more than 90% complete. The project has survived historic preservation hurdles, a global pandemic and economic instability.

Panchevre’s group has teamed with Shreem Capital, which will co-own and manage the new 77-room hotel and fly the Marriott flag. A river-level speakeasy and rooftop terrace with a restaurant and bar will open at roughly the same time as the hotel.
