10:20 AM EDT, 07/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union intends to review the bloc's airline ownership rules to prevent foreign control of companies operating across the region, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing an unnamed EU official. The review, which is reportedly likely to be announced in the autumn, comes as US private equity giant Apollo seeks to acquire regional budget carrier easyJet (EZJ.L) for 5.7 billion pounds sterling. Fellow US-based investment firm Castlelake, which had also submitted multiple offers for easyJet, is considering whether to engage in a takeover battle with Apollo for the London-listed airline. Under current regulations, EU airlines must be majority-owned and controlled by EU nationals. The European Commission, easyjet, Apollo and Castlelake did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
