Investors signalled that they were pleased with Last One Mile Co.,Ltd.'s (TSE:9252) most recent earnings report. Looking deeper at the numbers, we found several encouraging factors beyond the headline profit numbers.
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to May 2026, Last One MileLtd recorded an accrual ratio of -0.24. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥2.0b in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of JP¥1.11b. Last One MileLtd's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Happily for shareholders, Last One MileLtd produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Because of this, we think Last One MileLtd's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! Better yet, its EPS are growing strongly, which is nice to see. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks.
