When companies post strong earnings, the stock generally performs well, just like ByggPartner Gruppen AB (publ)'s (STO:BYGGP) stock has recently. We have done some analysis, and we found several positive factors beyond the profit numbers.
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Over the twelve months to June 2026, ByggPartner Gruppen recorded an accrual ratio of -0.47. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of kr423m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of kr162.4m. ByggPartner Gruppen's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Happily for shareholders, ByggPartner Gruppen produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Because of this, we think ByggPartner Gruppen's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! Furthermore, it has done a great job growing EPS over the last year. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. While earnings are important, another area to consider is the balance sheet. We've done some analysis and you can see our take on ByggPartner Gruppen's balance sheet by clicking here.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of ByggPartner Gruppen's profit. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. Some people consider a high return on equity to be a good sign of a quality business.
