Noble (NE) Stock Drops On Margin Squeeze Despite $6.8b Backlog
Share
Listen to the news

Noble shareholders just watched the stock drop about 9% to roughly $39 after Q2 earnings, even though the headline issue was a profit squeeze rather than a collapse in demand. A one off suspension tied to Brazil operations hit contract drilling revenue by about $43 million and helped flip the quarter to a loss. Yet backlog still sits at about $6.8b and adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization held at $212 million. The market is trading the setback. The real story is whether this margin hit proves temporary.

Love Noble's sizeable US$6.8b backlog but concerned about the earnings hit from temporary contract issues and margin pressure? Check out our list of list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (48 results).

Noble bull case leans on backlog and refinancing

Bulls argue Noble is a high quality way to play a multi year offshore recovery, with a modernizing fleet, rising utilization and stronger cash generation as backlog converts. Q2 gives partial support. Backlog is US$6.8b, with about US$1b guided to convert in 2H26 and US$2.3b in 2027, and roughly US$200m of fresh awards show rigs are still finding work at firm day rates. The US$800m refinancing into 6.25% 2034 notes plus a larger, longer revolver should free about US$35m of annual cash and supports the dividend at US$0.50 per share. However, the cut to 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to a range of US$850 to US$925m and negative free cash flow after US$205m of capex underline that the margin and cash story is not yet on a smooth trajectory.

Noble bear case focuses on margin risk and volatility

Bears claim Noble is highly exposed to operational shocks and a choppy offshore cycle, with earnings at risk when anything goes wrong. Q2 gives them clear talking points. Contract drilling revenue of US$679.4m, down from US$812.1m a year ago, plus a swing from a US$42.9m profit to a US$36.7m loss, shows how a single Brazil suspension that cut about US$43m of revenue can push the quarter into the red. Management now bakes in at least another US$15m revenue impact through January 2027 and trims full year revenue guidance to a range of US$2.8b to US$2.9b from US$2.8b to US$3.0b. Free cash flow was about US$59m negative in Q2. The stock’s roughly 9% drop to about US$39 after the release and a 90 day return down about 22% suggest investors are treating these issues as more than noise.
