The Calgary, Alberta-based company said it had net income of 83 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 92 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 89 cents per share.

The railroad posted revenue of $3.01 billion in the period, also topping Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.91 billion.
