Recordati (BIT:REC) Stock Hinges On Rare Disease Strength And Tighter Profitability
Share
Listen to the news

Recordati Industria Chimica e Farmaceutica went into this earnings print with the stock flat over the past week and only modestly higher over three months, hardly the profile of a market darling. Yet the headline from Q2 is clear: the rare disease engine is doing the heavy lifting while profitability looks tighter quarter on quarter.

Revenue in Q2 landed at €697.4m with basic earnings per share of €0.57 and net income of €116.6m. That sits below Q1 levels but fits into a half year in which rare disease and United States growth, along with confirmed full year guidance, remain the core story that investors will now test against the current €51.4 share price.

Recordati bull case: rare disease engine on track

Bulls argue Recordati can lean on rare disease to drive faster growth and better margins as the mix shifts toward Isturisa, Enjaymo and other specialist brands. H1 numbers largely back that up. Rare Disease revenue of €604m grew 17.1% reported and 22% at constant FX, clearly ahead of the group. Isturisa grew 58% year on year and management highlighted more than 20% better conversion from enrollments to commercial starts in Q2, which speaks directly to the thesis around improved diagnosis, access and U.S. field execution. U.S. revenue rose 29.5% reported and 38.2% in local currency, again aligning with the idea that U.S. endocrinology is the main growth vector. EBITDA of €540m grew faster than revenue, which suggests the high margin mix is helping, even while the company continues to spend behind Isturisa and new launches.

Recordati bear case: margin strain and FX risks persist

Bears worry that Recordati will pay a high price for rare disease growth, with FX, litigation and primary care headwinds eating into the benefits. There is some support for that caution. Net income in Q2 of €116.6m and basic EPS of €0.57 sit below Q1, while management flagged higher net financial expenses from unrealized USD FX losses. That validates the concern that currency can dilute reported earnings even when local trends look solid. Specialty and Primary Care revenue of €774m was broadly flat on a like for like basis, with losses from Cardicor and a weaker cough and cold season only partly balanced by Vazkepa and other promoted brands. The strong Eligard lift in Turkey is partly tied to a temporary competitor stock out, so some of that support may unwind, which keeps the sustainability of SPC margins an open question.
