NSK walked into this earnings print with the stock roughly flat over the past month and weaker over three months, hardly the setup for a big surprise. Yet the latest quarter shows earnings per share of ¥19.83 and net income of ¥9.7b on revenue of ¥255.6b, which keeps the recent profit rebound very much alive. The market now has to decide whether a trailing P/E of 17.9x for an auto and industrial supplier with this earnings profile still looks rich or simply reflects a business that is executing better than its share price suggests.
Is NSK’s 17.9x P/E signaling a stock that trades ahead of its fundamentals, or does the recent earnings profile still leave room for upside in the current price? Compare the implied upside or downside in our valuation analysis for NSK

Bulls argue that NSK is turning a traditional bearings and auto supplier into a higher margin portfolio built around robotics, actuators and solutions. The latest earnings and MTP2028 targets give this view some grounding. Industrial Machinery now carries JPY 377.5b of sales with operating income of JPY 12.6b and a margin of 7.3% when one off charges are stripped out. That sits closer to the 8% operating margin goal for 2028, excluding Steering. Automotive also shows underlying profitability, with baseline operating income around JPY 21.5b and signs of margin improvement in Q4 once restructuring costs are removed. Management is committing JPY 170b of growth investment, pushing robotics, PLM and actuators, and has formalised ROE and ROIC targets. These are concrete milestones that support the idea of a portfolio that can sustain healthier returns if execution stays on track.
The bearish narrative is that Steering, restructuring and integration risk will cap NSK’s profitability and keep returns below management’s ambitions. Recent results do not dismiss those concerns. Management expects FY2026 operating income of JPY 42b while absorbing JPY 9b of restructuring costs and a JPY 3.7b decline in Steering operating income. That highlights how much of the margin story still relies on future cost savings. Volume and mix were a headwind of about JPY 2.3b in FY2025, which shows that top line quality is not yet a solved issue. The planned NTN joint holding company is not included in guidance or MTP2028 targets, so any integration risk sits on top of existing reform goals. With one time restructuring costs continuing through 2028, bears can argue that the path to the 8% ROE objective remains execution heavy and vulnerable to delays.
