Solvay (ENXTBR:SOLB) Stock Recovery Case Runs Into Soda Ash Pressure
Share
Listen to the news

Solvay went into this earnings print as a heavily discounted stock, with the share price at €26.56 and flagged as trading far below an estimated fair value. The market has treated it as a structurally challenged chemicals group with high debt and a stretched dividend, so every quarter now serves as a credibility check on the turnaround story.

The headline this time is profit quality. Quarterly basic earnings per share moved to €0.60 on net income of €63m, yet trailing twelve month figures still show a loss and negative earnings from continuing operations. For you as an investor, this is less about one quarter’s rebound and more about whether the balance sheet and cash flows can sustain the promised reset.

Solvay bull case hinges on cost and mix progress

Bulls argue Solvay can reset profitability through cost savings, higher value products and energy transition projects, making earnings more resilient. Q2 gives some support. Underlying EBITDA of €187m and an 18.1% margin came despite weaker soda ash and a Middle East outage, helped by €26m of operational savings that show the cost program is delivering cash, not just targets. Management is still funding about €90m of transformation spend in 2026 and has reaffirmed full year EBITDA of €770 to €850m and free cash flow above €200m. That suggests internal confidence that savings and the planned Q3 restart of the Saudi peroxide plant can offset softer markets. Growth in electronic grade peroxide for semiconductors and fresh capex at La Rochelle for rare earth separation point to real capital being committed to the higher margin mix that underpins the long term bullish story.

Bear case focuses on soda ash strain and cash

Bears see Solvay as a cyclical chemicals group with structural soda ash pressure, execution risk on transformation and a stretched balance sheet. Parts of Q2 fit that concern. Underlying sales were just above €1b and down 7% organically, with Basic Chemicals hit by significant seaborne soda ash price pressure that hurts export margins. Group EBITDA fell 20% year on year and trailing twelve month earnings from continuing operations remain loss making, which challenges the idea of a clean profit reset. Free cash flow to shareholders was €15m in H1 and €11m outflow in Q2 once working capital and €106m of restructuring cash are included. Net debt of €1.8b and leverage temporarily above 2x show limited room for large missteps, even if the BBB minus rating is intact. Guidance now leans heavily on a timely Saudi restart and no further soda ash deterioration.

After EBITDA pressure, loss making trailing earnings and a dividend not covered by profit, it is fair to ask whether Solvay’s challenges run deeper. Review the independent risk analysis for Solvay which shows 2 important warning signs
