Arkema stock came into this earnings print looking beaten up, with a 90 day return that declined 5%, yet trading on just 0.5x sales and a dividend yield above 6%. That sets up a sharp expectation gap, as the market priced in margin fatigue and weak profitability. The quarter instead put profitability back at center stage.
The headline this time is earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization. Arkema delivered €391m of EBITDA with a 16.1% margin and about 90 basis points of margin recovery. Management also held the line on guidance for slight EBITDA growth in 2026. The stock now has to reconcile that margin story with its lowly valuation.

Bulls argue that Arkema’s pivot into higher value specialties should show up first in more resilient margins, not just headline growth. Q2 lines up with that claim. EBITDA of €391m with a 16.1% margin and about 90 bps of margin recovery came in a quarter where volumes fell 1.8% and demand in Europe and the U.S. stayed weak. That points directly to mix, pricing and cost control doing the work that the specialty narrative promises.
The earnings bridge also matters. Specialty Materials strength, including a record Q2 for Adhesive Solutions and solid Advanced Materials, offset pressure in Performance Additives and Primary Materials. Management quantified about €25m of extra EBITDA from major projects in the first half and still targets about €50m for 2026, which is a concrete milestone for the capacity led bull story. With guidance for slight full year EBITDA growth reaffirmed, Arkema is at least tracking the operational roadmap that optimists wanted to see.
Reveal where the surface looks calm, but the models start to disagree on Arkema's next inflection point, and see what the street is quietly building into the outer year revenue and EBITDA path with the analyst estimates for Arkema. The bearish worry is that Arkema remains too exposed to legacy, cyclical chemicals and that the shift to higher value materials is too slow to offset structural pressures. Q2 does not fully clear that concern. Specialty Materials and Coating Solutions carried the quarter, yet Performance Additives and Primary Materials again showed how exposed earnings remain to sulfur spikes, acrylic spreads and weak refining and fertilizer demand. Volumes fell 1.8% despite mix and pricing doing the heavy lifting, which keeps the risk of demand driven margin pressure alive if pricing power fades.
Bears also flag execution and complexity risk in a broad portfolio. The group is adding roughly €50m of project EBITDA this year, but net debt of about €3.6b and leverage around 2.9x LTM EBITDA leave less room for error if growth projects or decarbonization costs disappoint. The earnings recovery is real, yet the portfolio and balance sheet mix still leave several bearish milestones only partially addressed.
