Old National Bancorp (ONB) Stock Shrugs Off Record Efficiency Gains
Share
Listen to the news

Old National Bancorp stock barely flinched after earnings, up only 0.9% to US$26.64, even as the bank delivered one of its cleanest quarters in recent memory. The market is treating this like a routine update. The numbers tell a different story.

The real headline is profit quality. Basic earnings per share reached about US$0.65 and net income excluding extra items came in near US$249.4m, both supported by firm credit, rising loans and a cost to income ratio just above 47%. For a regional bank, that efficiency level and earnings power are what matter most today.

Old National Bulls See Efficiency Story Delivering

Supporters argue that Old National Bancorp is shifting from a lower profitability regional bank to a higher quality, fee rich and efficient franchise. Q2 goes a long way to proving that. Adjusted EPS reached US$0.65, a record, with record adjusted net income and an adjusted efficiency ratio of 45.2%. That directly addresses past concerns that a roughly 3.5% net interest margin left limited earnings leverage. Seven consecutive quarters of positive operating leverage suggest the Bremer acquisition and prior deals are now flowing through in lower unit costs. CET1 at about 11.09% and 14% growth in tangible book value per share over 12 months back the claim of stronger capital and balance sheet quality. Adjusted noninterest income of US$140m, ahead of guidance and broad based across wealth, investments, capital markets and mortgage, supports the idea of a more durable fee mix.

Bear Case Focuses On Quality Of Earnings Momentum

Critics argue ONB’s profitability uplift is thin and vulnerable to funding costs, commercial real estate and one off items. Q2 does not fully clear that bar. Net interest income relied on loan growth and higher yielding securities while management acknowledged a NIM headwind from sub debt issuance and SOFR. Guidance points to NIM improvement later in 2026, so bears can say the margin story still needs to play out. Fee income beat guidance but included roughly US$10m of items management expects to normalize, which challenges the idea that all of the noninterest income strength is repeatable. Retained CRE loans remain a structural risk even as nonaccruals and criticized loans declined and net charge offs stayed near expectations. The modest 0.9% share price move after what management calls a record quarter suggests the market is not yet willing to assume this level of earnings is fully locked in.

After a quarter built on record adjusted metrics, the open question is whether Old National Bancorp’s earnings quality can really absorb future credit, funding or capital shocks. Review our independent risk analysis for Old National Bancorp which shows 1 important warning sign
