Cummins (CMI) Stock Catches Margin Squeeze Despite Record Sales
Share
Listen to the news

Cummins stock slipped about 2% today even as the company reported record Q2 sales of US$9.5b and a fresh high in quarterly operating cash flow of US$1.5b. The headline is simple: the market focused on the modest pullback in profitability rather than the strength in demand.

The real swing factor this quarter was margin pressure. Cummins lifted full year revenue and EBITDA guidance, yet EBITDA margin for Q2 sat at 17.5% compared with 18.4% a year earlier. That tension between a stronger top line and squeezed margins is what is driving the sentiment reckoning in the stock right now.

Cummins bull case: growth engines firing, margins questioned

Optimists argue Cummins is shifting from a cyclical truck supplier to a growth story powered by data centers, higher value engines and cleaner technologies. Q2 goes a fair way toward backing that up. Power Systems revenue of US$2.3b, up 19% year on year, with EBITDA margin near 24.5%, shows the high value power generation thesis working. Management also raised full year revenue growth to 10% to 13% and nudged EBITDA margin guidance to 18% to 18.5%. That supports the idea that capacity additions and HELM platforms can lift earnings power, even with elevated R&D and warranty around the EPA 2027 transition. Accelera revenue grew 38% to US$145m and losses narrowed, which lines up with the long term zero emission opportunity. The multiyear, gigawatt level data center agreement also gives Cummins clearer visibility that fits the “recast as growth” narrative.

Cummins bear case: cyclicality, margin squeeze not fully cleared

Bears focus on cyclicality, legal overhangs and execution risk around new technologies and large projects. Q2 provides some support for that caution. EBITDA margin compressed to 17.5% from 18.4% a year earlier, even with record sales, as tariffs and incentive compensation weighed. That undercuts near term confidence in the path toward around 20% long term EBITDA margins. Accelera still expects a full year net loss of US$260m to US$290m, keeping the zero emission push a drag rather than a profit source. Capacity constraints in large gensets mean data center exposure is partly throttled by what Cummins can physically deliver. The recent C3.ai trade secrets verdict adds a fresh legal and reputational risk that sits on top of past settlements. Finally, the stock has eased about 2% today and is down over 11% on a 90 day view, which suggests investors are not fully convinced the growth story offsets these risks yet.
