Zalando (XTRA:ZAL) Stock Faces Rich Valuation After Margin Slip
Share
Listen to the news

Zalando stock went into this earnings day under pressure, with the share price down over the past week and month even after a stronger three month stretch. The market has been wrestling with thin profits and a rich P/E of 64.1x, so expectations around margins were tight.

The headline today is simple. Zalando swung from a loss in Q1 to a Q2 profit of €73.8m on revenue of €3,424.4m, while group adjusted earnings before interest and tax landed at €205m with a 6.0% margin. The question now is whether that margin profile justifies the valuation investors are still paying.

Is Zalando a genuine DCF bargain or simply an expensive stock trading on a stretched 64.1x P/E multiple? Compare the current share price against cash flow assumptions and margin trends in the valuation analysis for Zalando

Zalando’s Platform Ambitions Meet Mixed Execution Signals

The bullish story on Zalando is that it is shifting from a fashion retailer to a higher margin European platform powered by loyalty, AI and B2B services. The latest quarter shows some of that coming through. B2B revenue reached €335m with very strong growth and adjusted EBIT of €41m, with the margin up to 12.2%. That directly supports the idea that logistics and SCAYLE software can be meaningful profit pools rather than side projects.

On the consumer side, the platform angle is visible but less decisive so far. Partner share on Zalando stand alone is 36.9%, which points to more marketplace style activity and potentially better capital efficiency. Retail Media revenue is up close to 40% and now around 2% of B2C GMV. At the same time, pro forma GMV growth of 4.4% in Q2 and softer sneakers demand show that higher engagement and AI products have not yet translated into strong underlying growth.

Zalando Bears See Soft Core Growth, Margins Under Strain

The bearish view on Zalando is that a Europe heavy fashion platform with high return rates and rising logistics complexity will struggle to grow meaningfully while holding margins. Q2 gives that view some backing. Reported GMV and revenue benefited from the ABOUT YOU consolidation, yet pro forma GMV grew 4.4% and pro forma revenue just 1.1%. That is a clear miss against the idea of a fast scaling ecosystem. The group adjusted EBIT margin slipped to 6.0% from 6.5%, with management explicitly linking part of the compression to ABOUT YOU. That supports concerns that integration synergies are back end loaded while costs arrive early.

Weak sneakers demand in Europe and a refined full year growth outlook toward the lower half of the prior GMV and revenue range also align with fears about demand sensitivity and limited pricing power in a competitive online fashion market.
