On a per-share basis, the Northbrook, Illinois-based company said it had net income of $4.73.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of six analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $5.65 per share.

The fertilizer maker posted revenue of $2.22 billion in the period, which also missed Street forecasts. Five analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $2.43 billion.
