HubSpot (HUBS) Stock Reels From Slower Customer Growth Despite AI Gains
Share
Listen to the news

HubSpot stock just endured a 19% single day hit, closing near US$202, even though the headline story is not a collapse in the business. Q2 revenue came in at US$911.74m and the company stayed solidly profitable, with basic earnings per share of US$0.86. The real shock for traders sits in sentiment rather than the income statement. Guidance now points to slower customer additions and more measured growth as HubSpot leans into its AI pivot. That trade off is what the market is punishing today.

HubSpot’s AI ambition meets slower customer growth reality

The bullish story around HubSpot is that an AI first, multi hub platform can lift customer value and margins even if customer additions cool. Q2 gives some support to that idea. Revenue grew faster than billings, average subscription revenue per customer moved higher, and non GAAP operating margin reached about 20.3% with 3 percentage points of expansion. That is consistent with higher value, more automated workloads running on the same cost base.

The thesis also banks on real AI usage, not just marketing. Here the milestones look tangible. Data Agent and Prospecting Agent usage rose sharply quarter on quarter, agentic actions more than tripled year to date, and credit consumption increased after the April pricing changes. That mix of higher AI engagement, rising ASRPC and improving margins suggests the AI and consolidation narrative is starting to show up in the operating data, even as net customer adds fall short of past expectations.

Compare HubSpot’s rising AI engagement and margin expansion story with how the stock’s 19.1% drop to about US$202 lines up against institutional expectations. HubSpot bears focus on growth brakes, not AI buzz

The bearish worry around HubSpot is clear. AI and new pricing are adding friction for an SMB heavy customer base, so revenue growth and monetization may not keep up with earlier hopes. This quarter gives that view some support. Net customer adds were 7,000 against the 9,000 to 10,000 that many were looking for, and guidance now points to only 5,000 to 6,000 adds per quarter. Net revenue retention at 102% slipped 1 point and is guided to stay roughly flat for 2026. That is not a collapse, but it does not yet show the lift from AI agents and Data Hub credits that bulls want to see.

At the same time, non GAAP operating margin of about 20.3% with 3 points of expansion and strong free cash flow around US$168m challenge the idea that the AI pivot is structurally margin dilutive.

After a 19.1% one day share price drop and a softer customer growth outlook, it is worth asking if execution risk or AI product adoption issues are early clues to deeper fragility. Review our independent risk analysis for HubSpot which shows 1 important warning sign
