Duolingo just handed investors a sentiment test. The stock dropped about 9% today to US$122.58, even though the quarter featured solid revenue of US$298.454m and positive basic earnings per share of US$0.71. The market is reacting as if the growth story has cracked. The financials point to something more nuanced.
Coming into this print, Duolingo had already cooled off in the short term, with shares down over the past week and month, while still positive over the past quarter. Today’s move is about emotion meeting an earnings report built on user momentum and healthy profitability.
Is Duolingo’s 13.9x trailing P/E and 57.8% discount to the DCF estimate pointing to a genuine mispricing, or simply reflecting those projected earnings declines? Compare the stock’s current setup with our valuation analysis for Duolingo

The bullish view is that Duolingo can prioritize user scale and product quality now, then convert that engagement into higher quality revenue and margins over time. Q2 gives some tangible proof points on the user side. Daily active users grew about 23% year on year and retention hit an all time high, helped by experiments like Streak Revival and longer free trials that remove friction and pull more learners into deeper usage.
There is also early evidence that this user led approach is not starving the business of profit. Management modestly raised the full year adjusted EBITDA outlook and now expects about US$320m of adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow above US$375m, while guiding gross margin closer to 70%. At the same time, Q3 revenue and bookings guidance sits in the low teens growth range, which supports the idea that monetization is progressing more slowly than engagement.

This quarter gives bears some support. Management is still targeting 100m daily active users by 2028 and leaned into longer free trials and lighter paywalls, which help DAUs but delay cash returns from that usage.
The sharper concern is that early AI features and new tiers are not yet moving the revenue needle fast enough. Q3 bookings and revenue are guided to grow in the low teens, which is slower than the user growth discussed on the call. That gap matters for a business still heavily reliant on language learning for earnings. The stock’s roughly 9% drop after earnings also reflects disappointment that higher DAUs, better retention and AI cost savings have not yet reset the monetization narrative in a more convincing way.
