Nutrien’s stock has barely budged over the past month and sits around CA$93.62, even after the latest earnings hit the tape. That muted move contrasts sharply with the headline story. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization for the first half reached about US$3.5b and net margin over the past year sat near 8.9%, well above the prior year.
The market seems far more preoccupied with Nutrien’s heavy debt load and cautious multi-year forecasts for revenue and earnings than with the current profitability rebound. Today’s price action looks more like a valuation stalemate than a clear verdict on the quarter.

Bulls argue Nutrien’s integrated potash, nitrogen and retail platform should translate into durable margin strength and rising market share. Q2 and H1 results give that view concrete milestones. Record potash volumes and higher full year potash volume guidance show the system can push more tonnes through existing capacity. Automation is doing real work, with 53% of ore tonnes mined via automation in H1 and controllable potash cash costs per tonne flat while volumes scale.
On the retail side, H1 adjusted EBITDA of US$1.24b and roughly 10% gross margin growth in proprietary products support the idea that higher margin downstream and specialty products are gaining weight in the mix. Management is also backing the capital return pillar of the thesis. Capex guidance is slightly lower, buybacks are running at about US$75m a month in Q3, and the dividend was maintained at US$0.55 per share.

This set of results does not fully settle that concern, but it also does not clearly confirm it.
Record potash volumes, flat controllable potash cash costs per tonne and raised potash volume guidance work against the idea of immediate structural demand erosion. Retail adjusted EBITDA growth of 4% and roughly 10% gross margin growth in proprietary products also suggest the higher margin downstream push is not stalling.
Where the bearish narrative still finds support is in the pockets of strain and uncertainty. Phosphate EBITDA is under pressure from sulfur costs, retail nutrient volumes in nitrogen and phosphate fell in Q2, and management kept a cautious tone on portfolio reviews and regulatory scrutiny. The mixed share price reaction over 90 days reinforces that mid cycle earnings power remains in question.
