Novanta stock just jumped 6.7% in a single session, and that move highlights how emotionally charged this earnings season has become. The market responded to a clear headline of double digit revenue growth in Q2 and an increase to full year guidance.
Beneath the excitement, the key drivers were margins and cash. Adjusted gross margin reached 47% and adjusted earnings per share rose at a double digit rate, while free cash flow for the quarter was about US$65 million. For a high multiple medical and industrial technology stock, that combination is what moved the needle today.

Bulls argue Novanta is turning secular robotics and medical device demand into higher quality growth with better margins and more recurring revenue. Q2 gives some support. Revenue grew 10% with 9% organic, adjusted gross margin reached 47%, and adjusted EBITDA rose 16% while adjusted EPS increased 17%. Automation Enabling Technologies margins moved to about 53%, helped by higher margin products and duty recovery, which is what the margin story needs. Free cash flow of US$65 million in the quarter and US$117 million year to date, already above all of 2025, backs the cash generation angle. Closing Riverpoint and raising 2026 guidance, including higher EBITDA and EPS ranges, also fits the narrative of more medical and consumables exposure. The main soft spot is Medical Solutions margin at about 41%, which is below last year and shows the medical mix is not yet translating into cleaner profitability.
Bears worry that Novanta relies on acquisitions and restructuring, with patchy organic growth and pressured margins, and that this leaves little room for error. Q2 does not fully support that view, but it does not remove it either. Organic growth of 9% and a 1.1 book to bill in Automation Enabling Technologies challenge the idea of a weak core. However, Medical Solutions book to bill of 0.79 in the quarter and lower segment margin show uneven demand and profit quality. The Riverpoint deal lifts medical exposure to roughly 60% of revenue and recurring consumables to about US$300 million, but it also pushes pro forma gross debt to just above US$800 million, with leverage near 2.7x. Equity issuance of roughly US$300 million confirms some dependence on capital markets. Site closures and transformation charges inside Medical Solutions also keep execution risk firmly on the table.
