05:21 AM EDT, 08/07/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The UK Competition and Markets Authority said in a provisional decision that German grocery chain operators Aldi and Lidl should be designated as Large Grocery Retailers, making them subject to rules aimed at preventing the anti-competitive use of land. The regulator said on Friday that Aldi, Lidl GB, and Lidl NI have evolved from being Limited Assortment Discounters into Large Grocery Retailers because of the scale and geographic coverage of their stores, their full range of groceries, and their procurement model. Under the proposal, the retailers would become subject to the CMA's Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010, designed to prevent large supermarket chains from using restrictive land agreements to make it harder for rival supermarkets to open nearby. The watchdog is seeking comments from interested parties until Sept. 7 before making a final decision on whether Aldi, Lidl GB, and Lidl NI should be formally designated as Large Grocery Retailers under the Order.
