Cascades (TSX:CAS) Stock Rally Faces Slower Earnings Momentum
Share
Listen to the news

Cascades went into this earnings print with its stock already on a tear, up about 58% over the past three months and closing at CA$17.02 on August 7. The market priced in a turnaround story and then some. The headline today is that Cascades stayed profitable, with Q2 basic earnings per share of CA$0.21 on CA$1,219m in revenue, but momentum cooled versus Q1. The emotional gap is clear. The share price has been trading as if every quarter would look like Q1, while this report reminds investors that the profit journey in packaging and tissue is still choppy.

Is Cascades really a deep value story with a low P/E and a share price well below the stated DCF estimate, or is the interest coverage risk doing more work than it seems? Compare the implied upside and risk trade off in our valuation analysis for Cascades

Cascades bull case meets key operational tests

Bulls argue Cascades is in a real earnings upgrade cycle, driven by Bear Island ramp up, profit initiatives and better pricing power. Q2 gives some backing. Packaging adjusted EBITDA margin reached 15.5%, up from 14.4% in Q1, which lines up with management’s promised sequential gains. Bear Island ran at about 95% capacity and Greenpac hit record production, while box shipments on a comparable basis grew faster than the industry. That supports the claim of share gains and improving asset quality. Tissue is also tracking the story. Shipments increased sequentially with away from home volumes up faster than retail, consistent with the investment focus at Kingsey Falls, Granby and Pryor. Management also reports about CA$55m of cumulative savings from profitability programs since 2025, which ties directly to the narrative that internal execution, not just market pricing, is lifting earnings power.

Cascades bear case flags execution and cost pressure

The bear view is that leverage, input volatility and execution risk can cap Cascades’ upside and make the “deep value” label misleading. Q2 does not fully disarm those concerns. Leverage remains at 3.3x with only a modest CA$22m net debt reduction, while the asset sale timeline has slipped into early 2027. That keeps financing and timing risk on the table. Input costs moved against the company with recycled fiber and pulp both rising double digits quarter on quarter and logistics costs pushing up delivered prices. Tissue EBITDA fell slightly year on year despite higher sales, which shows how quickly cost inflation can squeeze margins. New U.S. tariffs could clip as much as about 5% of adjusted EBITDA run rate in a worst case before mitigation. That is a direct test of the thesis that external shocks will keep chipping away at improvements.
