Share
Listen to the news

Insiders who purchased CN¥40.9m worth of Future Machine Limited (HKG:1401) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 15% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at CN¥16m since the time of purchase.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Future Machine

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when insider Cho Man Lee bought HK$41m worth of shares at a price of HK$0.45 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being HK$0.27). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. Cho Man Lee was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of Future Machine

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Future Machine insiders own about HK$164m worth of shares (which is 41% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
