KDDI (TSE:9433) Stock Climbs On Margin Gains As Growth Questions Linger
Share
Listen to the news

KDDI stock went into this earnings print with a solid tailwind, up about 18% over the past three months and closing at ¥2,981 on the day of the release. The immediate question for you is whether the latest quarter justifies that optimism or starts to cap it.

The headline is clear. Q1 FY27 delivered a sharp profit punch, with adjusted operating income rising 21.1% on 5.1% revenue growth and supported by healthier mobile average revenue per user and tighter promotional spending. Short term traders will focus on that profit pop. Longer term investors will be more interested in how those fatter margins hold up over time.

Is KDDI’s 15.3x P/E at ¥2,981 a genuine discount to peers, or a signal that the market is skeptical about its growth profile and debt load? Compare that headline multiple with the full cash flow picture in the valuation analysis for KDDI

KDDI bullish story: higher LTV and growth engines tested

Bulls argue KDDI can grow lifetime value by lifting mobile ARPU, tightening churn and scaling new digital and enterprise lines. Q1 backs up that playbook. Active smartphones increased to 33.3m, churn improved to 1.17% and mobile ARPU rose to ¥4,400. Management links the profit jump to price and plan mix plus lower promotional expense, which shows the LTV focus is feeding through to margins. Business Growth operating income rose 21.6% and Personal Growth rose 9.3%. AI plus cybersecurity revenue grew 19.2% and cloud revenue grew more than 30%. Connectivity and Data Center revenue rose 20.6% with EBITDA margin above 40%. Taken together, these data points suggest KDDI is hitting early milestones on diversification and telecom cash flow is starting to support higher growth engines.

KDDI bear case: saturated telecom and patchy diversification

The bear story centers on a saturated Japan mobile market, ARPU that relies on repricing, and uneven returns from new businesses. Q1 shows some of that risk but not a clear break in the thesis. Telecom gains lean heavily on reduced promotional expense and plan mix rather than fast subscriber growth, which keeps the ARPU dependence concern alive. The end of most Rakuten roaming after September is another revenue headwind and management has not counted on it in guidance. In Financial Business, Au Financial Holdings operating income declined ¥3.7b, driven by mark to market losses and funding mix choices. That shows diversification is not yet a clean offset to telecom pressure. At the same time, solid profit growth in Business Growth and Data Center suggests the non legacy portfolio is moving in the right direction even if it is not yet a full answer to the bears.
