Florida’s business lobby is taking a very public shot at New York City leadership in Times Square to amplify its pitch that lower taxes are pulling jobs, companies and residents out of high-tax states like New York.

The Florida Chamber of Commerce rolled out a Manhattan billboard aimed at NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani that reads "Thanks for the jobs!" and even dubbed him its "Economic Developer of the Year," arguing New York’s progressive tax policies are helping drive business, wealth and population migration to Florida.

Mamdani’s Pied-à-Terre Tax Faces Criticism

New York City Mayor Mamdani is under scrutiny for his pied-à-terre tax, which targets luxury second homes valued over $5 million. The tax is expected to generate $500 million for public services, but its implementation has sparked privacy concerns due to a publicly searchable database listing approximately 960,000 city properties.

Critics argue that only about 31,000 properties meet the tax threshold, raising fears of unnecessary exposure for property owners. Mamdani defended the database, stating it is a complete property roll required by state law.

City-Owned Grocery Stores Proposal Sparks Debate

In addition to the tax debate, Mamdani’s proposal for city-owned grocery stores has also drawn attention. Venture capitalist David Friedberg suggested in a recent podcast that these stores could outperform established chains like Amazon.com‘s (NASDAQ:AMZNWhole Foods due to government-backed discounts.

The initiative, which has allocated $70 million in initial funding, aims to offer essential items at prices roughly 30% below retail. Friedberg warned that while the stores might initially gain popularity, they could lead to increased public subsidies over time, potentially encouraging similar programs elsewhere.
