Examining Cashflow Against Construtora Adolpho Lindenberg's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.

For the year to June 2026, Construtora Adolpho Lindenberg had an accrual ratio of 0.36. Statistically speaking, that's a real negative for future earnings. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Even though it reported a profit of R$48.8m, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through R$129m in the last year. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of R$129m, this year, indicates high risk.
