a2 Milk (NZSE:ATM) Stock Richly Valued as Margins Keep Tightening
Share
Listen to the news

a2 Milk stock closed at NZ$8.54 after the market absorbed a set of earnings that looked solid on paper yet still demand a closer look. The immediate price action reflects a company that has already enjoyed a 24.7% gain over the past three months, so expectations were not low coming into this result.

The headline this time is not revenue growth or special dividends. It is the squeeze on profitability. Trailing net margin sits at 10.1% compared with 11.3% a year earlier, while the P/E multiple of 29.9x still leans rich versus peers. Short term traders see the move today. Long term holders will focus on whether that margin pressure eases.

Is a2 Milk trading at a genuine discount, or is it simply carrying an expensive P/E multiple that the current 10.1% net margin cannot fully support? Compare the market price and growth profile against our valuation analysis for a2 Milk.

a2 Milk’s Growth Story Meets Margin Reality

Bulls argue that a2 Milk can turn its product and geographic expansion into sustained, higher quality earnings. The latest result partly backs that view. Revenue reached NZ$1.97b with underlying EBITDA and NPAT both higher, which suggests the company is adding scale rather than chasing growth at any price. English label infant formula grew strongly and now includes a2 Genesis, while other nutritionals and liquid milk in Australia and the US are contributing more meaningfully. These are clear milestones for the diversification part of the thesis.

The more ambitious claim is that insourcing at Pokeno and China registration wins will lift group margins over time. Here, the evidence is mixed. Pokeno losses still drag on gross margin and China label infant formula fell sharply after supply disruption. Underlying profitability excluding Pokeno improved, but the margin uplift from vertical integration is not yet showing through at group level.

a2 Milk Bears Focus on Margins and China Setbacks

The bearish view on a2 Milk is that China headwinds, tougher competition and execution risk around Pokeno will cap earnings quality even if revenue grows. This result gives that argument some traction. China label infant formula fell 14% for FY26 with a 33% drop in the second half after the supply disruption. Market share in that channel slipped and offtake is currently only about 40% of the previous run rate. That is a clear milestone missed for a business with meaningful China exposure.

Bears also worry that supply chain transition could weigh on margins. Reported EBITDA declined about 2.5% to NZ$284m and site losses at a2 Pokeno pulled down gross margin, even though underlying EBITDA excluding Pokeno rose. Management still refers to future breakeven at Pokeno and to recovery through FY27. For now, the printed margin compression and China label setback keep the risk side of the story very visible.

With valuation multiples already elevated and margins under pressure, the real question for a2 Milk is whether its balance sheet, cash generation and liquidity can comfortably support the current P/E. Check the full financial health analysis of a2 Milk stock
