Later this year, flights flying over the North Atlantic will adjust flight routes to avoid the formation of aircraft condensation traces, or flight path clouds. This project, called the “Blue Sky Project,” is the world's first related pilot project targeting an entire airspace. Starting in November, air traffic controllers that control the Shanwick airspace on the east side of the North Atlantic will recommend that aircraft adjust flight altitude to prevent the generation of new trajectory clouds. They will use Google's atmospheric condition forecasting system based on artificial intelligence to predict where the track cloud will form. “We can predict which regions will form trajectory clouds that persist and have a warming effect, and direct aircraft to bypass these regions.” At a press conference held recently, Marc Shapiro, a spokesperson for Contrails.org, a research institution involved in the project, said.
