New area to watch tracked in Atlantic near Portugal as El Niño continues to strengthen to its strongest ever

The National Hurricane Center designated a brand-new area to watch in the northeastern Atlantic, which is expected to bring rain to Portugal and Spain heading into next week. 

The area to watch has low odds for development over the next seven days. 

TROPICAL DEPRESSION TWO-C DESIGNATED IN CENTRAL PACIFIC WITH HAWAII EXPECTED TO SEE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS

An area of non-tropical low pressure is expected to develop along a front over the northeastern Atlantic by Friday, the NHC said. 

The system has the chance to develop tropical or subtropical characteristics if it separates from its front as it moves east into the weekend. 

The FOX Forecast Center said impacts beyond rain are unlikely with the system. 

There is no threat to the U.S. 

Aug. 20 marks the unofficial start of most activity in the Atlantic hurricane season. 

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Nearly two-thirds of all activity happens between now and October. 

Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
