Listen to the news

Insiders who bought Solvar Limited (ASX:SVR) stock in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The company's market value increased by AU$32m as a result of the stock's 11% gain over the same period. In other words, the original AU$136.2k purchase is now worth AU$157.6k.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Solvar Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Non-Executive Chairman Stuart Robertson for AU$70k worth of shares, at about AU$1.58 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of AU$1.74 per share to be enticing. Of course they may have changed their mind. But this suggests they are optimistic. If someone buys shares at well below current prices, it's a good sign on balance, but keep in mind they may no longer see value. Happily, the Solvar insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Stuart Robertson.

Stuart Robertson bought 90.56k shares over the last 12 months at an average price of AU$1.50. Solvar is not the only stock insiders are buying. So take a peek at this free list of under-the-radar companies with insider buying.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Solvar insiders own about AU$30m worth of shares. That equates to 9.1% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Solvar Insiders?

Insider purchases may have been minimal, in the last three months, but there was no selling at all. Overall the buying isn't worth writing home about. However, our analysis of transactions over the last year is heartening. Insiders do have a stake in Solvar and their transactions don't cause us concern. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
