MA Financial Group (ASX:MAF) Shares Trail EPS Surge As Margins Tighten
Share
Listen to the news

MA Financial Group heads into the post earnings trade with the stock at A$6.84 after a solid run over the past month, yet the real story sits in the profit engine, not the share chart. The headline is earnings leverage. Underlying profit grew strongly in the half and earnings per share lifted sharply, powered by higher recurring revenue and a larger asset management base.

For you as an investor, the key question now is how long that earnings trajectory can run against a rich P/E multiple and pressure on margins and the balance sheet. The rest of this piece unpacks that trade off.

Is MA Financial Group priced for the forecast 29.9% earnings growth, or already stretched given a P/E around 60.5x and thinner 1.2% margins? See how the current share price compares to cash flow and peers in our valuation analysis for MA Financial Group

MA Financial bullish thesis earns partial validation

Optimists argue MA Financial is building a higher quality, recurring earnings engine across an integrated ecosystem. H1 backs part of that claim. Recurring revenue is about A$154m, roughly 72% of total, which supports the idea that fee and interest income are becoming more predictable. Assets under management at A$15.5b, helped by IP Generation and large shopping centre deals, show the asset platform scaling to plan. MA Money and Finsure also look aligned with the growth story. The MA Money loan book is above A$7.5b with net interest margin around 1.2% to 1.4%, and arrears are low. Finsure has A$193b of loans on platform and higher revenue per broker after pruning. Higher ROE above 15% once divestments are stripped out and a 33% higher interim dividend support the view that the model can convert growth into shareholder returns.

Bearish concerns on margins and mix still unresolved

The main worry around MA Financial is that heavy investment and product mix shift could pressure margins and dilute returns even if revenue grows. H1 does not fully clear that hurdle. Group net profit margin on a trailing 12 month view is 1.2%, compared with 2.9% previously. That aligns with concern that new initiatives and funding costs are still having an impact. In asset management, recurring fee margin compressed 9 basis points to 159 basis points as larger core real estate mandates grew, which supports the concern about fee pressure from product mix rather than pure pricing power. Management is also spending on the U.S. private credit platform, which shows commitment to growth but keeps cost leverage in question. Stronger earnings and ROE help, but bears can point to margin compression as an important milestone that has not yet been met.
