04:54 AM EDT, 08/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission sent its statement of objections on the proposed graphic paper joint venture between UPM-Kymmene (UPM.HE) and Sappi, according to a Wednesday release. The European Union regulator said its preliminary investigation raised concerns that the joint venture would create a market leader in the European Economic Area, allowing it to increase prices and decrease quality for coated mechanical paper and coated wood-free paper. The Finnish forest products manufacturer, in a same-day release, noted the commission's statement of objections and said it is carefully reviewing the document with Sappi and will respond in due course. UPM-Kymmene added that it is confident that it will be able to address the competition concerns and plans to engage constructively with the commission in the next stages of the investigation.
