Kohl's (KSS) Stock Looks Cheap But Margin Quality Remains Unsettled
Share
Listen to the news

Kohl’s stock barely flinched after earnings, up just 1.2% to about $18, even as the report put the spotlight squarely on valuation. The retailer is trading on a trailing P/E of 7.6x, while many multiline retail peers sit much higher. That leaves investors asking whether the modest price move reflects patience or hesitation.

Under the surface, Kohl’s delivered quarterly earnings per share of about $1.34 on revenue of $3.5b, with same-store sales slightly negative. The key point for this quarter is the gap between a lowly valued stock and a business that is still generating profits and cash.

Is Kohl’s trading at a genuine discount with a 7.6x P/E on US$2.40 of trailing EPS, or is the stock cheap for a reason? Compare the current share price against our valuation analysis for Kohl's

Kohl’s Bull Case Hangs On Execution Milestones

Bulls argue Kohl’s can turn omnichannel upgrades and tighter operations into better comps and healthier margins. The latest quarter offers some concrete progress, but it is uneven. Comparable sales fell 0.9%, yet this was a smaller decline than a year ago and would have been only a 0.2% decline including Marketplace gross merchandise value. That lines up with the claim of gradual comp improvement. Digital sales grew 2.8% and store pickup now accounts for more than 20% of digital demand, which supports the idea that omnichannel services are starting to matter for how customers shop Kohl’s.

Margin recovery and cash generation are also key to the bullish story. Gross margin expanded, helped by tariff refunds, while SG&A expenses fell 0.9%. Net income of US$151m and a stronger net cash position give some backing to the view that operations and the balance sheet are moving in the right direction, even with weak sales.

Kohl’s Bears See Progress, Not Yet A Turn

The cautious view on Kohl’s is that a structurally pressured department store, with weak traffic and margin risk, will struggle to rebuild demand even if it tidies up the balance sheet. This quarter does not break that thesis. Comparable sales still fell 0.9% and management now frames full year comps in a range of down 1.5% to flat. Store visits were softer and beauty, including Sephora at Kohl’s, declined 4%, undercutting a key partnership growth story.

Bears also worry that margin gains prove temporary or expensive to sustain. The 305 bps gross margin lift relied heavily on about US$150m of tariff refunds that add roughly US$0.65 to adjusted EPS guidance. Management plans to reinvest part of that into heavier promotions and lower prices. That supports value perception, but it also means underlying margin resilience without one-off items is still unproven.

After margin help from refunds and heavier promotions, are these pressures contained, or are they early signs of deeper fragility? Review our risk analysis for Kohl's which shows 1 important warning sign.
