Dell (DELL) Stock Jumps As AI Backlog Recasts Growth Outlook
Share
Listen to the news

Dell Technologies stock did not creep higher after earnings. It ripped almost 16% in regular trading to about US$492, as investors rushed to reprice what looks like a step change in the business rather than a one quarter blip.

The hook is simple. Data center and artificial intelligence infrastructure turned Q2 into an earnings shock, with revenue of US$46.97b and basic earnings per share of US$6.41. The stock now trades on a 28x P/E and only slightly below one prominent fair value estimate. This puts the focus squarely on how durable this AI infrastructure cycle really is.

Dell AI Thesis Meets Key Scale Milestones

The bullish view on Dell Technologies has been that AI infrastructure becomes a second growth engine, with high value server deals pulling through storage, networking and services. Q2 goes a long way toward proving that out. Infrastructure Solutions Group revenue reached US$31.8b, with operating margin at 15%, which aligns with the idea that large AI and modernization projects can support healthier economics rather than dilute them.

AI server orders of US$60.9b in the quarter and a US$95b ending AI backlog show that demand is not just a one quarter spike. Over the past 12 months Dell booked about US$131.7b in AI server orders, which is a meaningful milestone for the thesis that AI becomes a multi year capacity build. Storage revenue of US$4.9b, up mid twenties %, and stronger unstructured storage also support the pull through part of the narrative.

Dell Bear Case: Cyclical AI Fears Face Mixed Evidence

The bearish view is that Dell Technologies is riding a one off AI spike that quickly normalizes, while supply and memory costs squeeze margins. Q2 does not cleanly support that. ISG delivered US$31.8b of revenue and a 15% operating margin, which pushes back on the idea that AI servers are structurally low margin. A US$60.9b AI order intake and US$95b backlog also cut against near term demand exhaustion.

However, bears get some traction on execution and sustainability. Management still flags constraints in DRAM, NAND and key AI rack components, so converting the swelling backlog into revenue is not risk free. Higher average selling prices partly reflect component inflation and richer configurations rather than pure volume, so some margin tailwind is inherently temporary. The mix is still heavily hardware, which leaves the concern about a slower shift to recurring revenue unresolved this quarter.
