We note that the TechTarget, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTGT) Chief Revenue Officer, Steven Niemiec, recently sold US$82k worth of stock for US$3.85 per share. It might not be a huge sale, but it did reduce their holding size 14%, hardly encouraging.
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director David Flaschen for US$119k worth of shares, at about US$5.97 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$3.81 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 24.20k shares worth US$144k. But they sold 72.26k shares for US$318k. In total, TechTarget insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. We consider this fairly low insider ownership.
Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. When you consider that most companies have higher levels of insider ownership, we're a little wary. We'd certainly practice some caution before buying!
