It Might Not Be A Great Idea To Buy Celcomdigi Berhad (KLSE:CDB) For Its Next Dividend
Share
Listen to the news

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Celcomdigi Berhad (KLSE:CDB) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date is two business days before a company's record date in most cases, which is the date on which the company determines which shareholders are entitled to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important as the process of settlement involves at least two full business days. So if you miss that date, you would not show up on the company's books on the record date. Meaning, you will need to purchase Celcomdigi Berhad's shares before the 10th of September to receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 29th of September.

The company's next dividend payment will be RM00.034 per share, and in the last 12 months, the company paid a total of RM0.15 per share. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Celcomdigi Berhad stock has a trailing yield of around 5.4% on the current share price of RM02.70. Dividends are an important source of income to many shareholders, but the health of the business is crucial to maintaining those dividends. So we need to check whether the dividend payments are covered, and if earnings are growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. Celcomdigi Berhad paid out 109% of its earnings, which is more than we're comfortable with, unless there are mitigating circumstances. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. It paid out 80% of its free cash flow as dividends, which is within usual limits but will limit the company's ability to lift the dividend if there's no growth.

It's disappointing to see that the dividend was not covered by profits, but cash is more important from a dividend sustainability perspective, and Celcomdigi Berhad fortunately did generate enough cash to fund its dividend. If executives were to continue paying more in dividends than the company reported in profits, we'd view this as a warning sign. Very few companies are able to sustainably pay dividends larger than their reported earnings.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with shrinking earnings are tricky from a dividend perspective. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. That's why it's not ideal to see Celcomdigi Berhad's earnings per share have been shrinking at 3.9% a year over the previous five years.

Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Celcomdigi Berhad has seen its dividend decline 4.0% per annum on average over the past 10 years, which is not great to see. It's never nice to see earnings and dividends falling, but at least management has cut the dividend rather than potentially risk the company's health in an attempt to maintain it.

The Bottom Line

Is Celcomdigi Berhad worth buying for its dividend? Earnings per share have been in decline, which is not encouraging. Additionally, Celcomdigi Berhad is paying out quite a high percentage of its earnings, and more than half its cash flow, so it's hard to evaluate whether the company is reinvesting enough in its business to improve its situation. Overall it doesn't look like the most suitable dividend stock for a long-term buy and hold investor.

Having said that, if you're looking at this stock without much concern for the dividend, you should still be familiar of the risks involved with Celcomdigi Berhad. For example - Celcomdigi Berhad has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
