An artificial intelligence researcher at Anthropic PBC resigned and called on other employees to also rethink the meaning of their work. He said that Anthropic and its main competitor, OpenAI, have taken an irresponsible approach in their all-out pursuit of a technology that could pose an existential risk to humans. Jacob Coxon, who has worked at Anthropic and OpenAI for the past three years, warned on social media on Tuesday evening that the two companies are advancing AI models that can “improve themselves”, and that these models may eventually become so powerful that humans cannot control them. Coxon wrote in the post, “They're going straight to superintelligence that can improve themselves, and they're betting on human lives. Don't underestimate the power of this technology. These systems will soon have the ability to surpass humans, invade anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and gain real power and resources.” According to Coxon, the team that developed AI “genuinely believes that by 2030, it could kill us all.” In response, Anthropic's current employee Evan Hubinger said that he and the rest of the company are really concerned about this situation. He wrote on the X platform: “I personally think the probability of this happening within the next ten years is over 10%.”
