Durum Discount 2026: Futures Liquidity vs Cash Wheat
Share
Listen to the news

I see a lot of great discussion about the discount between higher-quality MPLS wheat and KC wheat.

I also see great discussion of the divergence between cash Durum prices and KC and MPLS wheat.

Higher-quality wheats like MPLS and Durum usually trade at a premium to lower-quality wheat.

That is not the case right now.

Why is this?

It gets me thinking about the role of liquidity and speculation in the markets.

The rally off the 2025 lows is impressive: CBOT +50%, KC +70%, while MPLS +40%.

The wheat futures with the most volume and liquidity are CBOT, KC, and MPLS, in that order.

Also, the $WEAT ETF lets every Tom, Dick and Harry "buy" wheat.

And Tom, DIck and Harry can more easily trade CBOT and KC futures than MPLS.

Durum is cash-traded.

There is no futures market to speak of.

There's no easy way for Tom, Dick, Harry and us plebs to buy Durum.

Perhaps that explains why the lower-quality wheats are trading at a premium.

Maybe Durum and MPLS will rally to catch up with CBOT and KC.

Or the futures price reflects speculation more than current supply-and-demand sentiment.

Things I think about while on vacation.

Let me know your thoughts.
