12:30 AM EDT, 09/22/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Mining company BHP (BHP.L, BHG.JO) and Amazon (AMZ.F) launched a pilot program that allows companies to buy and sell credits tied to lower greenhouse gas emissions from copper concentrate and cathodes produced at the Escondida mine in Chile. The program uses Environmental Attribute Certificates to recognize emissions reductions within the copper supply chain, according to a Tuesday release. Escondida sources its electricity from renewable energy and uses desalinated water in its operations. Technology giant Amazon can purchase and retire the credits against the copper used in its artificial intelligence infrastructure, including circuit boards, chips, and cold plates. The pilot also aims to develop a framework for the certificates that is verifiable, traceable, and registered to protect against double counting and support a future market for lower-emissions copper credits.
