Based on the condition and severity of the wounds, the expert concluded that the injuries could not have developed during the brief period after the resident left the nursing home.

Pressure injuries can develop when prolonged pressure restricts blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue. Residents with limited mobility may require repositioning, skin assessments, pressure-relieving equipment, and close monitoring to reduce the risk of skin breakdown. Severe pressure injuries can become infected, and untreated wound infections may progress to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication.
The case underscores the importance of promptly preserving photographs, hospital records, nursing home records, and other evidence when a family discovers a suspected nursing home pressure injury.
