iShares Silver Trust Slides Wednesday: What's Happening?

Listen to the news

iShares Silver Trust (NYSE:SLV) shares are trading lower Wednesday morning as physical silver prices retreat under pressure from a firming U.S. dollar, elevated bond yields and hawkish rate commentary from Federal Reserve officials.

Here’s what investors need to know.

Dollar Momentum and Commodity Retrenchment

The downturn across precious metals funds follows direct hawkish remarks delivered Tuesday by Richmond Federal Reserve President Tom Barkin, who explicitly noted that “the risks to inflation outweigh the risks to maximum employment” while cautioning regarding future policy actions, “Will additional hikes be required, and how many? We’ll see.”

Barkin’s stance triggered an upward move in Treasury yields while bolstering the dollar against foreign currencies. Because physical silver bullion provides no yield, rising bond yields increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding precious metals.

Industrial Demand and Yield Sensitivity

Compounding the rate headwinds, silver’s dual function as both a monetary asset and a key manufacturing input leaves the trust exposed to broader monetary policy tightening. Elevated corporate borrowing costs threaten to slow capital expenditure across solar manufacturing, electronics and automotive supply chains, softening physical demand forecasts for industrial silver.

Furthermore, a stronger U.S. dollar elevates the purchase cost of dollar-denominated bullion for international buyers, constraining cross-border physical demand.

SLV Shares Drop Wednesday

SLV Price Action: iShares Silver Trust shares were down 3.57% at $58.56 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
