On September 23, local time, Anthropic announced the establishment of a life science research team and laboratory, and announced the early results of Claude's participation in biological research. Researchers say Claude discovered a previously undescribed enzyme system after analyzing more than 200,000 reverse transcriptase sequences and named it “array-related reverse transcriptase.” According to Anthropic, Claude's 950 agents used about 210 million tokens within 21 hours, selected 3,500 candidate systems and further reduced it to 20. ART is mainly found in the bacteriophages of infected bacteria and consists of reverse transcriptase, neighboring helper genes, and a set of regularly arranged DNA repetition sequences. The latter has similar characteristics to CRISPR repetition sequences. Preliminary experiments have shown that these repeated sequences can also be transcribed into multiple short RNAs, but their specific function still needs to be further investigated. The study was experimentally validated by Anthropic scientists, and the company has released a preprint.
