Multiple insiders secured a larger position in ATEX Resources Inc. (TSE:ATX) shares over the last 12 months. This is reassuring as this suggests that insiders have increased optimism about the company's prospects.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.
The insider Pierre Lassonde made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$4.7m worth of shares at a price of CA$2.60 each. That means that even when the share price was higher than CA$2.15 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. ATEX Resources insiders own about CA$112m worth of shares. That equates to 13% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded ATEX Resources shares in the last quarter. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. It would be great to see more insider buying, but overall it seems like ATEX Resources insiders are reasonably well aligned (owning significant chunk of the company's shares) and optimistic for the future. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
