Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya warned that three ideological forces — "socialism, doomerism, radicalism" — could have a lasting impact on young people and shape the future direction of Western societies.

Three Ideologies

On Saturday, Palihapitiya posted on X that the West is "fighting three issues: 1. Socialism 2. Doomerism 3. Radicalism."

"More often than not, people are infected with all three at the same time," he added.

Palihapitiya argued that the influence of these ideas among younger generations could have long-term consequences.

"The future of the West will be defined by how successful these ideologies are in influencing young people," he wrote.

Young Americans Face Economic Uncertainty

In May, young Americans became significantly more pessimistic about the labor market, with job confidence among those ages 15 to 34 falling 27 points since 2023 to 43% in 2025.

The concerns come amid a labor market in which U.S. employers announced 83,387 job cuts in April. AI was cited in 21,490 of those announcements, making it the leading stated reason for cuts, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Earlier this year, University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers and commentator Kyla Scanlon said Gen Z faced major economic challenges but could ultimately become the wealthiest generation.

Scanlon said traditional milestones such as homeownership had been disrupted, while Wolfers said AI could boost Gen Z wealth but warned that gains could be concentrated among a small group of AI entrepreneurs.

Former LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky and Chief Economic Opportunity Officer Aneesh Raman said young workers could remain relevant as AI reshaped the job market by developing uniquely human skills.

They identified curiosity, courage, creativity, compassion and communication as key strengths that AI could not fully replace.

Gen Z’s Shift Toward Socialism

Last year, renowned television host Bill Maher criticized Gen Z’s growing support for socialism after Zohran Mamdani’s win, arguing that frustration with capitalism was understandable but socialism had historically failed.

Investor Peter Thiel similarly linked younger Americans’ shift toward socialism to unaffordable housing and policies favoring older property owners.
