10:01 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- France and Germany are set to ask the European Commission for a proposal that would help prevent industries from shifting away from the region as carbon dioxide emissions rules tighten, Bloomberg News reported Monday, citing a draft document it saw. The document reportedly wrote that higher carbon costs for European Union producers could impact the bloc's competitiveness in third-country markets and lead to carbon leakage. France and Germany's effort is expected to receive support from Spain and Italy, among other countries, the report said. Representatives for the French and German governments did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
