Planet Labs (PL) stock ripped higher on Oct. 2 after the Earth-imaging company confirmed the successful deployment of 20 satellites into orbit via SpaceX’s (SPCX) Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The payload included 18 SuperDove optical imaging satellites, a hyperspectral Tanager-2 satellite, and a specialized artificial intelligence (AI) prototype satellite built in partnership with Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL).
Despite the surge, Planet Labs shares remain down more than 60% versus their year-to-date high.
PL stock rallied mostly because the deployment marks an operational milestone that improves the company’s daily Earth observation constellation.
The SuperDoves refresh and expand the company’s continuous high-resolution imaging capability, while the Tanager strengthens hyperspectral data capabilities designed for precise environmental tracking, such as methane and carbon emissions.
Most notably, the inclusion of Google’s Project Suncatcher AI satellite, equipped with its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), demonstrates Planet’s move toward edge-computing directly in space.
By processing raw orbital data onboard using AI models rather than waiting to downlink heavy files to ground stations, PL reduces intelligence delivery time, cementing its competitive advantage for high-priority defense and commercial imagery contracts.
Planet Labs' broader investment thesis is rooted in its transition from a raw imagery provider to a high-margin geospatial analytics platform.
Expanding collaborations with federal agencies, defense organizations, and enterprise clients offer a steady foundation of recurring subscription revenue.
PL’s operational cash flow has shown steady improvement, reaching $68.4 million at the end of its fiscal Q2 as satellite hardware costs decrease relative to software delivery margins.
Plus, strong institutional backing — with nearly 42% of shares held by hedge funds and institutional investors — reflects growing Wall Street confidence in Planet Labs’ market position.
As space-based AI adoption accelerates, PL shares remain positioned to turn proprietary orbital data into long-term commercial scale.
Despite year-to-date underperformance, Wall Street remains convinced that Planet Labs stock will recover rather swiftly.
The consensus rating on PL remains at “Moderate Buy,” with the mean price objective of about $35 indicating potential for 100% upside from current levels.
