Autodesk (ADSK) shares are extending gains on Oct. 5 after French industrial conglomerate Schneider Electric announced an all-cash acquisition of rival PTC at a hefty 42.3% premium. The massive $22.6 billion deal triggered a swift sector-wide valuation re-rating, shedding light on how underpriced engineering design and product lifecycle software assets may be.
Despite today’s gains, Autodesk stock remains down nearly 25% versus the start of this year.
Schneider’s multi-billion-dollar takeover of PTC serves as a critical valuation benchmark for the industrial engineering software ecosystem.
As a premier rival operating across CAD, 3D design, and “product lifecycle management” (PLM) workflows, ADSK stock stands to meaningfully benefit from this M&A catalyst. Why? Because strategic acquirers are demonstrating a willingness to pay significant premiums for software platforms embedded with generative AI and enterprise automation capabilities.
Coupled with Autodesk’s latest quarterly release, featuring 16% revenue growth and expanding net margins, the PTC deal reinforces that the market may be underestimating the company’s moat, its recurring cash flows, and long-term monetization potential.
The derivatives market also remains positive on Autodesk shares for the final quarter of 2026.
According to Barchart, the put-to-call ratio on contracts expiring mid-December sits at 0.38x at the time of writing, indicating a bullish skew (a reading below 1.00x is typically read as constructive).
Data currently pegs the upper price on these options contracts at about $236, signaling potential for a nearly 8% rally in ADSK through the remainder of this year.
Investors should also note that Autodesk ripped through its 20-day moving average (MA) today, a technical development that often suggests bulls have taken back control of the near term.
Wall Street analysts seem to agree with options traders’ optimism on ADSK shares as well.
The consensus rating on Autodesk sits at “Strong Buy” currently, with the mean price target of about $318 indicating the software stock could rally another 45% from here in the months ahead.
