05:00 AM EDT, 10/06/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The UK Office of Communications, or Ofcom, launched a probe into Meta Platforms (FB2A.F) to assess whether it complied with its illegal content and children's risk assessment duties before launching Instagram Instants. The watchdog will investigate whether the US technology giant failed to comply with UK online safety laws by not adequately assessing the risks posed by the feature before it launched in May, according to a Tuesday release. Social media platform Instagram's new feature allows content shared by users to disappear after it has been viewed. Ofcom can impose fines of up to 18 million pounds sterling or 10% of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater, if it identifies compliance failures. Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
