Micron Technology (MU) is in the spotlight on Tuesday morning after the memory chips specialist announced a $600 million settlement and cross-licensing deal with Netlist (NLST). Under this agreement that resolves the patent infringement litigation between MU and NLST, the memory giant will pay $30 million a quarter to the micro-cap firm for five years.
Note that Micron stock is currently trading at more than 3x its price at the start of 2026.
The deal resolves protracted IP disputes over several DIMM and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) technologies vital for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. By settling, Micron secures a multi-year global license, eliminating risks of court-ordered import bans or escalating damages following prior jury verdicts in federal court.
Crucially, spreading the payment over five years — $120 million annually — represents minimal cash flow drag for Micron, which generated nearly $44 billion in fiscal Q4 alone.
The agreement removes a key legal cloud while guaranteeing unimpeded access to crucial next-generation AI memory architecture, which could help MU shares push further up through the remainder of 2026.
Micron remains one of the major mega-cap AI hardware plays, surging on record-breaking demand for its HBM3E and server DRAM offerings tied to cloud and data center expansion.
Its FY26 annual sales soared to $133.2 billion, accompanied by expanding gross margins and solid cash generation.
More importantly, while Micron shares currently trade near all-time highs, their forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple sits at about 6.5x, which makes them exceptionally attractive for an artificial intelligence beneficiary.
In short, near-term volatility is possible following its meteoric year-to-date rally, but for long-term investors seeking top-tier exposure to data center infrastructure, MU’s solid fundamentals warrant exposure heading into 2027.
Wall Street analysts remain constructive on MU stock for the remainder of 2026. The consensus rating on Micron Technology sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of about $1,531 indicating potential upside of roughly 45% from current levels.
